My tips for living happy, healthy, and green!

Healthy Eating Stuggles

I really really try to keep myself and my family eating a healthy diet. It is not about weight loss or dieting…its about health! But I still struggle with it. My goal to is fruits or veggies at each meal, low carbs, and little to non refined sugars. Sometimes I feel no matter how hard I try I always give in to the easy way out by throwing some frozen fries in the oven for a side to the meal when I could just as easy put some frozen asparagus into a pan. I just don’t know why I do it to be honest and at the end of the day I get pissed at myself.

My other major problem is the evenings. I will do so well throughout the day, a smoothie for breakfast, good snack, salad for lunch, green juice….and then come dinner and the after dinner snack time. That is the time of day for the sweets and carbs just call my name. I think it has something to do with my husband being home and him wanting the same things and the fact of watching TV. Its like mindless snacking in a way. For the most part my dinners stay on the healthy side but there always seems to be that draw to carbs at dinner. I am trying to work on ways to break these habits, I think that is the problem years of the habit of eating in the evenings. I know I have to give myself time, but that is something I am not good at, I want to be able to just be strong and do it right away!

The other goal I have is to drink more water! I used to be really good at this but lately I have been slacking big time! To be honest I think I need a new water bottle…this may sound a little silly, but I was thinking back to when I used to drink a ton of water and the one thing that stands out is the water bottle I had at that time I loved and took everywhere. Now I have this crappy thing that I hate and I think that is a problem. So I guess to solve this problem I just need to get out and buy myself a water bottle that I love.

I am just going to keep working towards the goal of healthy meals throughout the day. I just have to remember to learn from the mistakes of today and change things for tomorrow.

Today’s Arm Circuit Workout

Today is my Arm Circuit day. I have decided to try to switch up how I workout to try to block against a plateau and to keep myself from getting too board. I enjoy running outside, but get board extremely fast running on the treadmill. So I have been adding some circuit training at least 2 out of the 5 days I workout. My circuit training is not any special workout plan, it is just a list that I have put together myself to keep my heart rate up and all my muscles working.

100 Jumping Jacks

20 decline push ups (feet on BOSU ball)

15 Burpees with BOSU balls

15 bicep curls (with 12lbs dumbbells)

25 Jumps Ups (jump onto 4 high step with both feet)

15 tricep dips

High Knees for 45 seconds

20 Hammer Curls (with 12 lbs dumbells)

50 Jumping Jacks

20 Tricep Extentions (with 10lbs dumbbells)

25 Jumps Ups

20 Rows (with 12lbs dumbbells)

15 Burpees with BOSU ball

15 Straight Arm Raises (15 front, 15 side with 5lbs dumbbell)

45 sec High Knees

Depending on how much time I have after this I will possible run a couple miles on the treadmill and then as always 10 minutes of stretching!  Try it out and let me know if you enjoy this circuit.

A New Venture

After a lot of thought I have decided to start my own business from home. I am a stay at home mom and I am ready to venture into the world of entrepreneurship. I have decided to create my own handcrafted soaps. In the world we live in today there are so many chemicals and toxins in the products we use everyday. My goal is to create soaps from natural and organic ingredients that naturally create beautiful healthy skin and have no products in them that are going to cause any harm.

I am in the very beginning steps of creating this business. I have orders in for supplies that I will need and am in the process of creating a name, logo, and website. I am very excited to be setting out on this venture. It feels good to know that I will be creating a product that is safe and beneficial to all who use it.

For a long time now I have been wanting to create something that is healthy and beneficial for myself, my family, friends, and all who use it. I feel I have finally found a great way to do this. We use soap everyday and it comes in direct contact with our skin which is a direct line to our bloodstream. We need to be using products that are beneficial to healthy skin and not putting any toxins into our body.

I will continue to post along the way through this adventure!

Half Marathon Training

5.5 Weeks until the big day! Peapod Half Madness Half Marathon. I have been training now for about 2.5 months and I am up to 8 miles on my long run and a total about about 21 miles/week. I am very proud of how far I have come, to be honest if you would have asked me a couple years ago I never would have thought I would be able to do this. Although I have come to the conclusion strictly running is not my thing and I don’t think I will be doing any other strictly running races that are longer then a 10K. I have found that strictly running is a little boring for me. I really enjoy different types of exercise and like to change it up more often. I am really interested in doing more obstacle course type races.

I have learned a lot about myself so far along this journey. Running tests your mental strength along with physical strength and endurance. For me most days its more about getting my mind right to get out and run. Although on the days its the hardest for me to get myself out of the house and get going on the run are the days I really need it the most. Once I have completed my run I always feel much better then before. I feel accomplished mentally and physically.

Having a training schedule laid out for the entire duration of the training has been a major help for me personally. The training schedule is my guide and also it keeps me focused on my goal. I like knowing exactly what I need to do each day and it keeps me accountable. Before when I have tried to run I just would go out and try to figure things about on my own, which is not wonder I never kept it up. I didn’t know how to train for running or how much do each day and when to increase my distance.

This process so far has been anything but easy but it has given me a lot of confidence in myself and what I can do when I put my mind to it. I believe everyone needs to continue to challenge themselves in life. If you don’t challenge yourself you will never know what you can do!

In Need Of Inspiration

Sometimes life feels like things can never go the way I want them to or have them planned to go. Every time I think things are finally going to work out so we can finally move forward with our plans something changes or comes up to throw all of our plans off once again. Lately all of this has been weighing on my mind so much that I can’t seem to feel inspired about things. I try to keep myself motivated to do the things and keep moving forward…it would just be nice to have one thing work out. I know this sounds like a lot of whining and I know there are so many people out there that have thing harder then I do. I just needed to vent to try to get some perspective and get my motivation back.

I need to remember the things that make me feel good about life. I need to keep moving forward and not let set backs hold me back. I am trying to find a way to make each day more meaningful. I want to simplify my life and only deal with the things that are really important.

Remember what inspires me:

My Family
Nature
Health
Learning about going green
Fitness
Helping others
Being frugal

Now those are the things I need to focus on and keep working to move forward through the road blocks that come up.

Have You Found Your Passion?

I feel like I have finally found my passion in life and it makes me feel so good! When I am talking about your passion is life I mean other then family and being a mom of course! My family is my number one priority and love in my life. I am talking about something for me so that I feel good about what I am doing and that I can actually impact the life of others.

My passion is health and wellness. I want to help teach other how to life healthy lives through diet, exercise, and overall well being. It amazes me more and more each day how much people do not know about his subject. I am trying to find new ways each day to help others. Since I am a stay at home mom I am trying to find ways to do this while still staying home with my son. The first thing I did was become a Shaklee Distributor, then I started this blog, and now I am starting to run for different causes. This is a great way for me to promote exercise and raise money for different causes that I believe in. My next goal is to become a certified personal trainer so I can assist people in there journey to becoming healthier.

This summer I am running a 10K race to support the Lincoln Park Zoo. I feel strongly about supporting this Zoo because it is free to the public. It is a place where families can go and enjoy time together and not have to worry about how much money it is costing them. If you would like to run for this cause you can check out the United Run for the Zoo 2011, there is a 5K or 10K option.  Or if you would just like to donate please visit my donations page.

The second run I am doing this summer is a half marathon on August 28th to support Cal’s All-Star Angel’s. Cal’s Angel’s was start by a family that lost there 12 year old son to leukemia. The mission and purpose – granting wishes and providing financial assistance to kids fighting cancer and their families – continues Cal’s legacy of always caring about others above anything else. Having a son of my own makes me think about how hard it would be if he were sick and inspires me to help Cal’s Angels so they can help others. I am running the Peapod Half Madness on Aug 28, 2011, if you would like to run click here or to donate click here.

I encourage everyone to really think about what they feel strongly about and go out there and do something about it. I feel so much better about myself doing something that I am passionate about and I get to help others as well.

Have You Joined a Mom’s Group?

After having my little one and not knowing many people in the area I started looking online for some way to meet other moms in the area. I came across a great website called meetup.com. There were so many groups in my general area to choose from it was great.

I am currently a member of two moms groups. I have found its a great way to get out and meet people. I love having so many activities to choose from. For me its also a great way to learn about different things to do in my area. I have found out a lot of things about the park district I live in and other great activities that I had no idea where in my area.

I really think that all new moms should try joining a mom’s group. I am a very shy person at first but this was a way I could make myself get out of the house. It’s also a great way to social my little guy. If not for being part of this group we would spend most days just the 2 of house at home. While I love hanging out with my little guy and love being at home we both need to get out and do new things. I want my little guy to have lots of great experiences and being part of a Mom’s group is a great way to start. He gets to meet lots of new kids, go to fun places, and just get used to being in different places around different people.

Check out a Mom’s group or any other group in your area at meetup.com!
