Live Happy, Live Healthy, Live Green

My tips for living happy, healthy, and green!

How Is Your Indoor Air Quality?

According to the Indoor Environments Division (IED), pollutant levels  indoors may be 2-5 times higher then outdoors, which is not good for most people because 90% of our life is spent indoors. That sounds a little scary to me.

Where does the pollution come from?

  • Asbestos
  • Biological Pollutants
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Formaldehyde/Pressed Wood Products
  • Household Cleaning and Maintenance, Personal Care, or Hobbies
  • Lead
  • Nitrogen Dioxide
  • Pesticides
  • Radon
  • Respirable Particles
  • Secondhand Smoke/Environmental Tobacco Smoke
  • Stoves, Heaters, Fireplaces, and Chimneys

So what can we do?

1. Reduce the products in our home that emit these pollutants. One thing that is easy to get rid of is household cleaning. You can replace these items with organic cleaners.  A wonderful product is the Get Clean products from Shaklee.

2. Bring In the Green. We all know that the plants outdoors clean the air. Well we can do the same thing indoors. Buy some house plants, but do your research first and be sure they are not poisonous if eaten by a pet or a child.

3. Let the Fresh Air In. Open the windows, if the air outside is less polutted then the air inside we want to let that air into our homes.

4. Test Your Home. You can get at home radon tests, if your home is above 4 pCi/L you should take steps to fix the radon gas problem. Click here for more information on radon gas in your home.
